Book selection: "The Last Cuentista" by Donna Barba Higuera

Book description:

Petra Peña is a teenage girl, and the daughter of two scientists, living in New Mexico with her younger brother and extended family. Petra's grandmother, with whom she is very close, is a cuentista, a storyteller. Through folktales Petra's abuelita shares their culture, traditions, and history. Not only do these stories entertain but they contain valuable lessons and warnings, and offer guidance about life's meaning.

Oh, wait -- did I mention it's 2061 and a comet is about to destroy Earth?!?

For many years starships have existed (imagine luxury cruise ships for intergalactic travel) but now they’re being retrofitted to whisk all the brightest minds - and their families - from earth to a new planet before Earth is destroyed. Too bad there are only three of them, and they’re big but not THAT big. Because of Petra's scientist parents, her family has 4 seats on board. However, all the ordinary, wonderful people - like Petra’s abuelita - must be left behind to face the comet and Earth’s destruction.

As Petra and her family embark on this journey, leaving everything they’ve ever known behind for an unknown planet, Petra vows to carry on her abuelita’s storytelling tradition, for the benefit of humanity. By the way they won’t reach this new planet for hundreds of years - imagine being cryogenically frozen - and that’s a lot of time and trust and vulnerability, especially considering some potentially sinister motives are afoot (like certain people considering the Earth's destruction an opportunity to 'reset' the human race by erasing the past).

Petra will have to draw upon her own strength, cunning, and knowledge of abuelita’s folktales if she’s going to survive. She is, without a doubt, the last cuentista.
